Life

I guess everyone goes through phases, but I’m stuck in this funk that I despise. I have no motivation to do anything. I have all these things that I want to do, that I plan to do, that I end up avoiding doing… It’s getting ridiculous. My family is suffering, my house is suffering, my blog is suffering, and I see it…that’s the worst part. I know I’m in a rut and I haven’t been able to drag myself out of it.

I’ve been sad alot…about nothing in particular. I LOVE my life. I have amazing family and friends. I enjoy what I do. There’s nothing major about my life that I would change if I could. But a sadness has engulfed me. I seem to constantly be on the verge of tears. I find myself zoning out and feeling heartbroken about how fast my kids are growing up, how there are so many people that don’t appreciate the simple things, how some people are so selfless and sacrifice so much and get little or no recognition, how my life seems to be flying by. All these deaths in the media are not helping.
I don’t deal well with death, and being able to see people grieve in real time via Twitter and Facebook is hard to cope with. The one that hit me the hardest is the death of Billy Mays. I follow his son on Twitter, and watching the whole thing unfold is surreal. Celebrities always seem sort of disconnected from the rest of the world, but seeing grief in many different forms from a variety of people is hard, and it makes them more real and not just an image. All this has pushed me deeper into my rut.
Well, I am putting an end to this crap right now. I have this bond with my husband that I feel is extraordinary. Late last week I was in the midst of my funk feeling helpless and distraught, I received a text that brought a different kind of tears to my eyes. My wonderful husband sent this text:

‘Just wanted you to know I love you… GOD says you are weak but He is strong… Let Him be your Father… Love ya’

That was exactly what I needed. God works in ways we don’t understand, but I understood this. My husband somehow knew that I needed him at that moment, and since he couldn’t physically be there for me, he sent me that simple yet powerful message. I am flesh and blood, weak, fragile. God is my rock. He is my FATHER…my saviour. I have made the decision to use His strength to pull myself out of the rut. I am done. Today I say no more to tears and feelings of helplessness. God is on my side. He is in my heart. He is my strength. He not only loves me, he is love. He IS love. That is so huge! I will praise Him today by joyfully cleaning my house, by laughing and singing and playing with my son, by cooking a good dinner for my family, by being the person he intended me to be…loving and happy and smiling and genuine.

Old Navy Smackdown!

Well, I managed to snag the $50 off $100 coupon on Old Navy Weekly after the most recent reset, and we made the 1.5 hour trip to Branson to put the smackdown on the Old Navy in Tanger Outlet Mall. Greg was in dire need of jeans, and they had some really good deals. We both ended up getting several items that we wanted, and the trip turned out really nice. When they enter the coupon, their system splits it between all the items…I think this is pretty cool so it shows how much I actually paid for each item after my coupon. =) Here’s what we ended up getting…

(Red is original price, Blue is the sale price, Green is what I paid)
Halter Swimsuit – 29.50 ~ 5.00 ~ 2.61
Pink & White checkered shirt – 19.50 ~ 8.47 ~ 4.42
Cross-Front Jersey Dress – 15.00 ~ 7.83
Black V-Neck Layering Cami – 8.50 ~ 5.00 ~ 2.61
White V-Neck Layering Cami – 8.50 ~ 5.00 ~ 2.61
8×3 Zip Case – 4.00 ~ 2.09
Cargo Shorts – 19.50 ~ 13.65 ~ 7.13
Loose Fit Painter Jeans – 29.50 ~ 19.99 ~ 10.43
Boot cut Jeans – 29.50 ~ 19.99 ~ 10.43
Orange Ringer T-shirt – 8.50 ~ 4.25 ~ 2.22
Blue Ringer T-shirt – 8.50 ~ 4.25 ~ 2.22

Total: 180.50 ~ 54.60

I ended up saving almost 70%! It was well worth the trip, and I will definitely be trying for this coupon again!

Thrifty Thursday

Okay, I’ve been totally slacking this week and didn’t really get that great of deals at Walgreens. I do plan on going back later today and making up for my WG neglect. So far, all I’ve done is:

Burt’s Bees Lip Balm – FREE (Coupon from the website)
Propel Flavored Water – .64 (used .75 off coupon) – not something I would normally buy…I was thirsty.
Coloring Books 2/$5 – Cheap entertainment for 2 y/o while at coffee w/ my friends.
Planter’s Trail Mix 2/$3 – Snack to distract kids for above mentioned coffee date. ($1 RR)
I also used (2) $3 RR from a previous transaction making my OOP $3.50. (I tried to use another $3 RR but they don’t cover tax and the tax was more than .50.)
I plan on hitting the Aquafresh Toothpaste this afternoon, Pull-ups, and Organix Shampoo/Conditioner if they have the hangtags. I’ve noticed our Walgreens is kinda bad about not having the hangtags when there’s a special…not sure if they’re doing it on purpose. Actually, I’ve never seen hangtags at our Walgreens now that I think about it. Well, I guess I’ll find out later. I hope to update this with some pictures, so check back! =)
Okay, I’m back from 2 trips to WG today. Separate trips because I had time to kill in the morning, but wouldn’t be coming home until this afternoon so I couldn’t get milk. Anyways, here is what I got in both trips combined:
(2) Oreo Cakesters – 2/$5 (had $1 coupon)
(3) Mars Candy FREE – (had 3 FREE coupons from mail)
(6) Kotex Pantyliner – 2.99/ea (used 4 coupons for a total of 4.50 off and $6 in RR)
(2) Aquafresh Toothpaste – $3/ea (used 2 coupons for a total of $1.75 off and $6 in RR)
Accu-Chek Glucose meter – 14.99 (rebate in box & $5 in RR)
(2) Schick Quatro Titanium 4 cartridge pk – 10.99/ea (used rain check for B1G1 & 2 coupons for a total of $8 off)
Not pictured:
Starbucks Frappucino – 2.39 (had $1 coupon and NEEDED caffeine)
(2) 2% milk – on sale for 2.59/ea
Needless to say, I don’t think I’ll be buying anymore pantiliners for quite awhile. LOL Plus, I’ve been feeling a bit funky lately, and think it might be my blood sugar, so I’ve been wanting one of those checkers anyway.
Original Total Before Tax & Coupons: 75.49
After coupons & tax: 33.67 (Plus I will be getting the 14.99 back in the mail & I have RR to use next week…I’d have to say that was pretty decent.)

Game Room or Confessional?

Today started out like any other…granted, I woke up exhausted due to bad dreams and staying up too late, but whatever. Kids did their ‘Morning Duties’, ate breakfast, watched a little Dora the Explorer, A arrived and they all headed to the game room to build a clubhouse. After seeing their attempts at making the clubhouse…

and that they banished K2 to a separate, minuscule one…
while making fun of her for snuggling her teddy bear inside, we had a little chat.
Me: Why are you making fun of Kara for snuggling her teddy bear when you are 9 years old and sleep w/ Daddy Bear & Blankie?
T: *shrug*
Me: You need to think about what you are going to say to your sister and decide if you would like someone treating you that way. Embarrassing her is not a good idea…I’m your Mom & I know all kinds of embarrassing things about you that I could share but choose not to. You need to go apologize.
T: (all pouty) Okay.
Instead of an apology, I hear:
T: I have to tell you something.
A: Okay.
T: I am 9 years old and I sleep with a teddy bear named Daddy Bear…and a blanket I call Blankie.
K1: I sleep w/ a bear too!
K2: I sleep w/ Beary!
A: Okay.
Me: That’s not what I told you to do…what are you supposed to do?
T & K1: Sorry Kara…and Beary.
I thought the whole apology to ‘Beary’ was adorable…
What caused her to start this whole confessional thing rather than just say ‘I’m sorry.’? I have no clue. Maybe she thought I was actually going to tell something embarrassing about her. Not that I have anything major on a 9 year old. Kids baffle me sometimes.
After the chat, I decided to help them make a clubhouse they could all fit in with lots more room…
Currently there is giggling, whispers, occasional shrieks of laughter, and lots of imagination taking place in the game room.
UPDATE: While proofing this post, T asks what I’m blogging about.
Me: (in a joking way) it’s about you being mean to your sister.
T: (with a shocked look on her face) You read my notebook?!
Me: (putting her in a headlock & giving her a nuggie) What notebook?
T: (now embarrassed, but smiling) Never mind.
Confessional it is…

Purex 3-in-1 Review

My first impression: Purex 3-in-1 Laundry Sheets are convenient and easy. Dispenser seems flimsy, but it doesn’t really need to be that durable since it’s just holding the 3-in-1 sheets. Scent (Tropical Escape) is wonderful. Not sure about the environmentally friendliness with the sheet being so thick…will research.
Environmentally Friendliness: Neither the packaging nor sheets are made of post consumer recycled material, but they are researching this for future product updates. The sheets themselves are made of polyester and are not recyclable or biodegradable. I am going to try to come up with some sort of craft to ‘recycle’ them myself.
We own the Whirlpool Duet system, so my normal routine consists of adding powder detergent to the dispenser, and then I use home made dryer sheets. These would not be cost effective for us even though I bought it using coupons (Regularly $5.94 for the starter pack that does 20 loads, or a refill pack of 24 loads). We currently use Kirkland Laundry Detergent bought last year from Costco for less than $20 for a huge plastic container. My homemade dryer sheets are squares of fabric that I soak in 3 parts water, 1 part liquid fabric softener. (They don’t really help that much with static, but our laundry always smells good.) I’m actually thinking I’ll try using the left over 3-in-1 sheets rather than the fabric squares. They seem quite a bit more absorbent. On to the test…
1st step: With high hopes, loaded washer & threw in marvelously smelling blue sheet. Started washer. (Normal load, warm wash/cold rinse, high spin speed.)

2nd step: Transferred clothes from washer to dryer…including (no longer blue) sheet. Also, noticed the fabric softener strip was missing in spots. The Purex site says that it’s because the water was possibly too hot. I find this odd since it was washed on warm and not hot (I rarely use cold/cold)…so we’ll see what happens when I wash a load of whites using hot, and a different load of colors using cold (for experimental purposes).
3rd step: Removed clothes which smelled quite nice. As you can see in the photo below, the sheet still had quite a bit of the fabric softener/static remover stripe left over after running through the dryer. This was surprising since it was already partly missing before starting the dryer.

UPDATE: I did test the sheets in a cycle of cold/cold (which was mainly towels, and a few pairs of jeans), and as you can see it looks the same as the one from the warm/cold cycle.
I also did a load of whites set on hot/cold, and the fabric softener strip is nearly completely obliterated. I am not sure what the exact temperature of my water is, but I think it’s pretty normal.
My washer even has a sanitize setting which actually heats the water to super hot (not sure on the exact temperature of that either) to kill bacteria and other cooties, so the water can get quite a bit hotter…not going to test that cycle since I never use it.
Over all, I think these are a great idea. It just seems they may have been released a bit prematurely. There are many things I can see that need improvement. The sheets need to be either made from recycled materials, be recyclable/biodegradable, or ideally all 3. They should perform the same in all water temperatures, or specify which temperatures they are intended for. The fabric softener strip should actually work as it was designed. With a few improvements, I can see these being a really great product.

Reviews out the wazoo…

I’ve been neglecting reviews because of laziness…NO MORE! I’m working on reviews for the following products:
Purex 3-in-1
Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner
Nivea Touch of Radiance Cream Oil Body Wash/Touch of Sparkle Cream Oil Body Wash
California Pizza Kitchen Frozen Pizzas (Crispy Thin Crust & Self-Rising Crust)
DelMonte FruitChillers
Bill Nye the Science Guy Paper Recycling Factory
Please be patient with me as I gather all my facts and opinions and try to arrange them in a coherent fashion to benefit mankind. Okay…maybe not ‘mankind’, but for sure people who like to read reviews before trying stuff!
