Psycho Saturday

This Saturday went from the original plan of being a “nice, slightly busy” Saturday, into a “running around like a crazy person” Saturday. Originally, Greg was to take the kids to Lowe’s for the Build & Grow clinic, while I enjoyed some ‘me time’ and then we were to go to a birthday party that afternoon in Yellville. Well, Greg ended up having to work, so I took the kids to Lowe’s. He totally lucked out last week with the Jewelry Organizer…it had like 11 nails…no biggie.

I on the other hand, had to deal with 29 nails, sliding parts, a hinge, and stickers…OMGosh.
Kara whacked her finger with the hammer, causing tears & a tiny drop of blood which required band-aid. Trinity hammered the hinge nails in crooked which made it not ‘transform’. She had to get a new front end from the lady and start over. Kylie broke hers at the very end, but it still works, she just has to be careful with it when it is in ‘Lowebot‘ form. Overall they did a great job and had a good time.
We then headed a few towns over to Yellville for our friend’s kids’ birthday party. She somehow managed to have 2 kids on the same day 2 years apart…which equals one party…genius. After miscalculating how long it would take me to get there, we were the first ones there. Kids enjoyed coloring Yo Gabba Gabba place mats, relentlessly driving everyone crazy with the noisemakers,
eating delicious birthday cake with blue frosting,
playing ‘Pin the eye on Muno‘, and Giraffe Limbo.
I only got one good picture of the birthday boy, and not a single one of the birthday girl. The kids were having a blast and were all over the place.
Overall, everyone had a great time at the party, and it was wonderful to spend some time with my buddies even though it consisted of mostly kids laughing, screaming, and blowing noisemakers.
Even though today was psychotically busy, I would consider it a total success. I guess I wouldn’t mind it too much if every Saturday were like today, as long as Greg was included in our fun. =)

~The Challenge~

This year, my Mom (Kim), sister (Nicki), sister-in-law (Shay), and I have devised a challenge system. Taking turns every 2 weeks, we issue each other a new challenge. These challenges are ways to better ourselves. The first challenge of the year was issued by Mom, and was texted to each of us. The next will be from me, then Nicki, then Shay, and it will start over. The challenges will be listed below with the active challenge in bold. If you’d like to participate or have suggestions for challenges, just leave a comment! Also, feel free to leave comments regarding what you are doing, any accomplishments, or struggles you are facing. We want to be able to encourage and support each other throughout the year!

Challenge #1
Our first Challenge girls: There are 96 ten minutes in the approximately 16 hours we are awake each day. Lets dedicate at least one of them to the Lord. Quiet time alone praying, giving thanks, reading the Bible. (You all have one.) I started off today in the book of Hebrews 1, 2, and 3. Feels great! Love you all!
Challenge #2
Okay guys, our first challenge was meant to strengthen our faith, so our second challenge is to start strengthening our bodies. We’re starting small so there are no excuses. For 15 minutes a day, I want you to do some sort of movement…work out, yoga, stretching…something.
Challenge #3
Really been thinking a lot about the challenge and I have decided that we could all be a little more mindful of what we put into our bodies. So back to the basics we go! Our challenge is to drink at least 32 oz. of water a day…that is only 2 water bottles a day and only half of the recommended amount. If you already drink that much, you should try to drink more than that!!! Love you all!!!

Challenge #4
What better way to show love then starting with yourself? It seems like so often people have problems expressing themselves. I believe this is because you can’t truly show love unless you love yourself. Our newest challenge is to take a minute each day to write something you like about yourself. It doesn’t have to be made public, but try and keep all of them together so they are easy to look back on when you are feeling down.

Challenge #5

Whether you participate in Lent or not, giving up something that is not beneficial to your life is a good thing, so here’s the new challenge… Give up something that is not good for you for 2 weeks…candy, tv, secular music, etc. Whatever works for you!

To-Do Tuesday 2010 – Week 8

(FYI I am keeping the festive birthday decorated TDT sticky because I like it.)
I didn’t quite bust everything out last week, but I think I did pretty good since I caught a crazy cold on Wednesday, and still haven’t completely shaken it yet. I’m feeling much better, but am in that ‘not taking any crap’ mood which means I’ve been a little snippy lately. Aside from my sweet husband having to put up with that, and my cold…life is good! On to the list…gonna try to keep up my flow from last week!

1. Stick with the Family Challenges!
2. Stick to weekly menu plan.

Menu Monday

We stuck with our menu this week with only one alteration. I made a pork roast rather than a beef roast because I was missing a key ingredient…which somehow didn’t make it onto my list.

The tofu turned out okay…I’d like to experiment a little more. Grayson loved it, which was fantastic since he’s becoming a little picky. It was mainly a texture issue…plus the fact that my sinuses were so stuffy I could hardly taste anything means that it needs another chance. This weeks menu is pretty easy…we’ll be using the crock pot a few times.
Creamy Hamburger Stroganoff (I use ground turkey in place of ground beef sometimes.)
Country Fried Steak (Tyson’s frozen) w/ Copycat Cracker Barrel White Gravy
Alfredo w/ Crab meat (over either linguine or fettuccine whichever I have on hand)
BBQ Cola Pork Roast (we had this last week, but since I didn’t post the recipe…here it is. Also, you will need 2 cans of Coke…one for the initial cooking & one for after you drain the liquid and add the BBQ sauce.)
BLT’s (I lay the bacon strips out on a broiler pan sprayed with Pam, sprinkle with brown sugar & fresh ground pepper, and bake at 400 until crispy. This usually sets off the smoke alarm because of the sugar melting down & burning in the pan, but it is delicious.)
There you have it! And you even learned I often set off the smoke alarm…I haven’t burnt any actual meals, but I really need to clean the bottom of my oven. Maybe that will be on my To-Do List in the near future. ;)

Thrifty Thursday

Well, it’s been awhile since I smacked Walgreen’s around, so I figured it was time. Plus, they had a deal on AXE and I happened to have some left over coupons for free products…hehe. Here’s what I grabbed this week.

John Freida Root Awakening Shampoo/Conditioner Reg. $5.99/ea, on sale 3/$15 – $7 in coupons = $8.00 ($5 RR) = 3/$3
AXE Shampoo $5.99, Styler $6.99/ea, after my coupons = 5/FREE …AND I received a code for 2 FREE movie tickets for a future date night with my wonderful husband. =)
Lypsyl LypMoisturizer $2.99 ($2 RR) = .99
Grand total after taxes = 15.15 (plus 2 FREE movie tickets & $7 RR to spend on my next trip)
Oh, last thing…I entered a drawing on a local radio station, and won a gift certificate for dinner at a local restaurant! So, our next date night…to include dinner and a movie…should cost us nothing! WOOT!

To-Do Tuesday 2010 – Week 7

(Lisa @ Crazy Adventures in Parenting has been hosting To-do Tuesday for an entire year now! Congrats/Thank You to Lisa for all her hard work & Happy Birthday to To-do Tuesday!)

Lucky number 7! It is totally on this week. I am setting the bar high. I’ve been feeling pretty close to normal, been cooking like crazy, and enjoying the occasional flurries in our area. I really wish we lived somewhere that huge snows weren’t an oddity. I would totally take some serious snowboarding lessons & tear up the slopes! Between the snow we’ve received and watching the Winter Olympics, I am missing vacationing and snowboarding in Colorado. (Don’t get me wrong…I’m not a good snowboarder, I just love it…I’ve only been twice.) Okay…on to my list.

1. Stick with the Family Challenges!
2. Stick to weekly menu plan.
3. Keep up with/follow budget using mint.com.
4. Rearrange/declutter our bedroom.
5. Have a serious discussion with hubby about our family vacation…in July.
6. OPEN AN ETSY STORE!
7. Get back in the cleaning/decluttering groove.
8. Order handle for washing machine door so I can stop hurting myself doing laundry!
9. Get oil changed in my truck…(embarrassingly) WAY overdue!
10. Remember to update progress on To-Do List!
11. Slowly get into exercising without hurting myself…still sore sometimes…kinda thinking this will NEVER end.
12. Sew patches on kid’s Lowe’s aprons.
13. Take inventory/photos of ALL completed items for my non-existent Etsy store.
14. Make something with sewing machine.
15. Bake/Freeze crescent rolls, english muffins, & pizza dough.

Menu Monday

Okay, I confess…we didn’t stick with the menu that much, but it wasn’t totally my fault… One night I took Trinity to Pizza Hut, another night Greg and I had a date night and ate at Chili’s (yum!), and the last off night was because one of our neighbors blessed us with several packages of pork so we had that one night. This week’s menu will carry over a couple recipes from last week, but I’m making up for it by posting TWO simple desserts for my lovely readers. =)

Turkey Cabbage Bake (I use the homemade crescent roll dough I mentioned last week, and leave out the thyme.)
What we like to call Messy Pete’s (homemade Sloppy Joe’s)
Corn Dog Casserole (carried over from last week)
Tilapia Parmesan (also carried over from last week)
Easy Crock Pot Chicken (I use Cream of ‘whatever-I-have-in-the-pantry’ Soup, and serve this over rice.)
California Rolls w/ Sweet Dipping Sauce and Baked Tofu (I typically skip the sesame seeds in the California Rolls recipe since I don’t have any, and I haven’t tried Tofu yet…just experimenting with expanding our menu!)
*DESSERT BONUS*
Fudge Crinkles (super easy 4 ingredient cake mix cookie recipe…yummy! You can use any flavor of cake mix to change it up.)
Dump Cake (simple dessert – also made with cake mix…kinda like a cobbler. I LOVE this dessert!)
Hopefully posting our weekly menu plan will give you some good ideas of how to eat on a budget, and add some new recipes to your rotation. Enjoy! =)

Frugal Friday

Since I neglected to post a Thrifty Thursday post this week, I figured I’d throw in a Frugal Friday. I must admit, I haven’t been that frugal this week. Wednesday evening, I took my beautiful daughter out to eat at Pizza Hut (she earned a certificate for a FREE Personal Pan Pizza from school, so I figured I’d take advantage & have dinner…just me and her)

and afterwards, we headed to Walgreen’s for some last minute Valentine’s shopping for her party the following day. I decided I might as well grab hubby some Dove Men’s Body Wash since it was FREE after the RR, so technically I was frugal on that trip.
Another thing that was kinda thrifty, but kinda not was a purchase I made from Buy.com. Hubby has an Xbox 360, and I have been sucked into the Modern Warfare 2 hoopla. I don’t know what it is, but annihilating teenage boys and making them hate me because #1 I’ve kicked their butts, and #2 I’m a girl – is so stinking fun. Because of this new addiction, I need an Xbox Live Gold account. This typically costs around $50/year or $7/month. Buy.com suckered me into purchasing a 12 month card by offering a deal for $35, and I coupled it with using my Ebates.com account (earning 3% cash back), so I ended up saving a total of $16.05. Even though this was a splurge for me, I saved money…so I’m considering it a win.
Lastly, Walgreen’s is offering an 8×10 collage for FREE…if you choose to pick it up at the store. I made a collage of all the family pictures we’ve had made, plus a few of just the kids or just us thrown in to show how much we’ve changed in the last 5 years. It’s amazing when you look at it all together like that. You can take advantage of this offer by going to Walgreen’s Photo, clicking on the ‘gifts’ tab, next click ‘collages’, then ‘collage prints’, then select 8×10. You then build your collage following the instructions, and use the code VDAY during check out.
